Chantier de l’économie sociale
Director of Partnerships and Development
Montreal, Canada Area
Béatrice Alain is the Director of Partnerships and Development at the Chantier de l’économie sociale. The Chantier is an independent organisation that brings together actors and partners of the social economy in Quebec, in order to promote collective entrepreneurship and develop new sectors and tools able to support the emergence of a development model based on values of solidarity, equity and accountability. By enabling the social economy, which ensures collective ownership and the long-term economic, social and cultural vitality of communities, the Chantier aims to support the development of a plural economy in service of the common good as well as the needs and aspirations of communities. Mobilizing this broad coalition over twenty years has led to an extensive ecosystem that supports collective enterprises (coops and enterprising non-profits) in Quebec that today account for over 10% of GDP and employ one out of 20 workers. This ecosystem is both renowned internationally and inspired by best practices developed all over the world and in this sense the Chantier has long engaged in constructive international exchanges with practitioners from all over the world.
For several years, Béatrice has been particularly interested in the means and strategies to facilitate dialogue and ultimately the collective action of stakeholders from different sectors and different territories in order to reinforce the development of the social economy. Recently, she directed the organisation of the 2016 Global Social Economy Forum –GSEF2016, an event co-organised by the Chantier and the City of Montreal to promote collaborations between local governments and stakeholders of the social economy that gathered over 1,500 participants from 62 countries. She is currently Co-Chair of the TIESS, an organisation that enables the liaison and transfer of innovative practices of the social economy for the development of territories in Quebec, as well as president of C.I.T.I.E.S., an international organisation for the sharing and transfer of best practices of the social economy at an international level.
